Dumbfounded

“Don’t even bother,” I said. “Once again, you lost it.”

I looked away from her streaked face and spotted the seagulls dropping their afternoon business on the sail. A satisfying laugh arose within me.

“You aren’t even giving me a chance to explain,” she interrupted. “I could not control myself. It was an overwhelming feeling. It’s not like I wanted it to happen.“

“Yeah, well it did happen, Suzanne, and frankly, I’m sick of it.”

“Nice choice of words, Dan,” she choked, as the lobster from brunch was lost into the sea yet again, causing frenzy to the nearby flock.

Something Lost at Sea

The image of the sail wavers on the horizon for one, last forever moment and is gone. Strange that I only feel relief in that I no longer need worry about someone on deck seeing me. It will be hours before Sam check the cabin and notices my absence. By then it will not matter what Sam notices. From the surface of the sea the horizon extends only a few dozen feet around me while above the sky extends to infinity. Amazing that above me the sky is almost the same color blue as the cool wetness that supports me.
