Ted: Upgrade

"Mr. Park, so good of you to see me on short notice."

Mr. Park laughed at the irony. He had been drugged, bound, and beaten. The last few hours had seemed like a year long trip to Cleveland.

"It seems that you did a less than optimum job for my client. Her eyes, Mr. Park, aren't working correctly."

"Who?" gasped Park.

"Justina," answered his captor.

"But she said she wanted to see the future. Why is she angry?"

Artificial politeness slipping away, Mr. Tabor stood and slapped Park. "She can only see five minutes forward. That doesn't meet her requirements."

Ted: Losing Her Name

The Rex woke up late. He stretched and rubbed his bloody eye.

"Dammit, Orina! Where the fuck are you?" His bellows rattled the ratty prints hanging crooked on the plaster walls.

A mousey waif crawled in the vacant doorway.

"You know you are supposed to be here when I wake up. By my bedside. Do you need another lesson?"

Orina shook her head in fear and cowered even lower on the rough wooden floor.

"Good girl. Now open your mouth."

As the Rex aligned his flab, Orina revealed the blade she had hidden between her legs.

Long live the Regina.

Ted: In the Houses of the Holy

The Regina stood straight for the first time in years. She stared the beat cop in the eye, defiant, until I arrived.

I knew the Rex had a protege, but not that she was female. Or so young.

"You okay? The medics would like to make sure you're ok before they leave." I knew she was the Regina now, but I was not one of her subjects. And I sure as hell wasn't going to arrest her for killing the Rex.

"I'm fine, Detective. I'm ready to go."

"Miss, you won't be charged."

"Then I'm really ready. To go home."

Ted: Her Oldest Friend

Fast forward fifteen years, and am walking in to ask the Regina to repay an old debt. She has built herself a reputation for strength, sense, and stability. Darker things were only hinted at, never spoken aloud.

Still, I wasn't ready for the woman I saw before me. The skinny little girl I saw back then had been replaced by a beautiful woman. Her hair and body both shone with health. Her eyes were hooded though. I didn't know if that was from fear of me or shame that I was the only one alive who knew what had happened.

Ted: Nyekulturny

The Regina was loved by her proles. They came to her with certain skills or she helped them gain new ones. Her people were not divided by income: they all got equal shares. Individual accomplishment was rewarded with time off. An extremely well done job landed one of her proles on Jamaica for six months.

The Kraut and Old Zar ruled thier realms by fear, but defered to the Regina when Accounting Day came.

So I stood, in a room so unlike that one fifteen years ago, and asked her to break faith with her people.

"I need a name."

Ted: Robert Preston?

Orina, it was rumored, had herself created quite a few illegal clones. Seems one of her only ways of really connecting to people was to have her favorite movie star replicated, program it with all the dialog ever from their movies and interviews, and have it over for dinner.

Orina would let the clone live all during the meal, asking it hours of questions. She of course had made sure that the clone brains had no pain receptors.

When the dessert trolley was finally rolled around, the clones would invariably choose the pink chiffon pie.

She always had the eyeballs.

Ted: Dangerous Dawn

He asked to be relieved of duty, transferred or put on leave. Extreme pressure from above made that impossible. Leave would be granted after this damn thing was all wrapped up, not before. Plus, he really was the only one with enough contacts to make this stop.

Meanwhile, the city was nervous. Everyone in this sinkhole of a town wanted to know what exactly was coming out of the ninth ward.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Iggy called. "Meet me at the Dive Shop," he said and hung up. Ah. Hell's bells. Always with the drama. "Cunt." Keeping him alive is going to be fun.

Ted: 9 P.M., The Unveiling

She watched the monitors from inside her grotto. The image was slightly wavy and the color was not quite right. She made a note to have the R&D guys to work on eyeball lens modifications before the next event. It just wouldn't do to have this bodymod ruined by imperfect vision; the military grant that paid for her research wouldn't allow it.

The Navy didn't know that she had modded herself of course.

She saw her guests assemble at the pool and heard her cue through the underwater speakers.

"Masquerade Guests! Your Hostess welcomes you and invites you to Swim!"

Ted: 4:32 PM

Regina would regret only the loss of her wonderful bath. Even with all her wealth and power, she couldn't forget when her name had been "Orina" to the old Rex.

Only that damn detective would recognize the symbolism of what she was about to do.

She removed her gown and smallclothes, folded them neatly, and placed them in the oubliette. Her shower wall, consisting of twenty spray heads arranged for best affect, was temperature controlled. Her complete control of the water temperature was one her favorite details.

She willed herself not to scream while the steam boiled away her flesh.
