A CONSTRUCTIVE USE OF TIME
After Dwight’s parents left, Gran told him she was a child of the Depression and would not tolerate laziness. “Summer heat makes children lazy,” she said. “A lazy child is the Devil’s lap dog.” She said if he wasn’t awake, washed and in the kitchen at six each morning she’d wallop him no matter his fourteen years.
Dwight did the work of two farmhands that summer, painting the barn, slopping hogs, mucking out stalls. After he had bathed and eaten dinner, Gran made him read the Bible aloud. He built so much muscle that summer he strangled her with ease.
