Little Jawarhalal stared nervously out at the bright, oppressive stage lights and the audience nearly obscured by its blinding glare. He could feel thousands of eyes boring their way into his soul. His throat was getting dry, and his stomach felt as if it were deflating inside of him.

"Could you repeat the sentence, please?" Jawarhalal -- "Jaws" to his schoolmates -- croaked to the moderator.

"'The English professor's eloquent vocabulary gave him a reputation for being rather sesquipedalian.'"

To his right, Jaws could see his sole remaining rival, Suzette LaRoche, half-heartedly trying to suppress a triumphant smirk.

"That B-I-T-C-H," he thought.

I clutched my ticket in a sweaty hand as I approached the table. The glassy eyes of the town elders watched me come forward and I could see the smirks they were hiding.

"Place your ticket in the box."

I obeyed, glancing at Julia standing beside me, her own hands grasping at each other for dear life.

"As finalists in the town lottery, you have the right to choose the means of death if you win. Choose now."

I took a deep breath. I already knew the fate I would ask for my family and I.

They drew a ticket.
