Pip smoked three cigarettes. He said, "After it falls humans will barter their birthrights to demons. These buildings agree. Darkness is coming."
For a long moment I felt enveloped by bilious fog. An instant later I heard an airliner soar overhead and I realized human enterprise would always triumph over gargoyle superstition. I walked to the center of the roof. The concrete was firm under my feet. Pip was wrong. Dreadfully mistaken. The World Trade Center would stand forever.
I climbed aboard Pip's bat-winged shoulders.
"Let's go to Florida," I said.
"Good," said Pip. "New York gives me the heebie-jeebies."
