BAIT

The lake teamed with edible delights. All day Mortie feasted on an assortment of plankton, algae, and occasionally worms, which were particularly tasty. But obtaining them required timing, attention and skill. A school of Mortie's friends had risked snacking on worms only to fall victim to the clever ruses of humans: they were reeled and died on the surface.

But Mortie was large, smart and quick, and the plump worm before him floated untethered. He lunged and devoured it only to experience difficulty breathing moments later.

"He'll fry up nice," Walt said as he tossed the flounder into his bucket.

IT'S SUDDENLY HARD TO BREATHE. (Goldfarb cont')

After falling through the void and landing with a thump and a bounce Goldfarb lay, eyes closed, heart stopped, lungs still, his past life flashing across his minds eye.

The years of hard work and training, the self-inflicted pain, the runners high at the end of a hard ten miles.

The hundreds of races won and the hundreds that were lost.

Before his closed eyes a white light beckons.

Peace.

The crush forces the air from his lungs, and his heart beats.

Goldfarb's eyes open, his nose inches from the dangling testicles of the old man wrapped in a sheet.

It's Suddenly Hard to Breathe

I'm in excellent shape for a person my age. I eat right, exercise, and don't smoke.

I love to read myself to sleep, snuggled under the down quilt. Quite often I'm startled awake by the thud of my latest novel slipping from my hands and crashing to the floor.

But tonight is different. I'm dreaming I'm being crushed under the weight of a collapsed building. I'm trying to move, trying desperately to free myself from this immobilizing weight.

I find it's suddenly hard to breathe as I awake only to find the huge cat purring contentedly on my chest.

THE BEGINNER

Choke me," he said.

The girl, unaccustomed to such bedroom behavior, placed her slender hands beneath his chin.

"Go ahead. Don't be shy," he said.

His neck felt like rubber and his pulse throbbed at an incredible speed.

She applied a soft pressure. He continued to thrust.

"Harder," he said. "I'm a big boy."

Unable to pursue it any further, she rubbed her palms up and down his Adam's Apple. Unsatisfied, he struck her closed fisted in the mouth.

She winced, but continued. He smiled and struck her again.

They both knew it would be much better the 2nd time.
