In the working week, the tools operate on teeth, scrape and push, cut and encourage them into health. Gloved, masked, watched by hopeful, scared eyes. It is a form of carpentry. Building, shaping, making, tooling things to fit, to function. Teeth to fit together, an acceptable bite, removing pain.

He has another set of these tools. After hours, they shape slivers of exotic timbers into inlay work too small to be done without magnification and good light. People close their mouths on the weekaday work his hands create – and let them fall open at the fineness of his weekend carpentry.

That Shrinking Feeling

Never had love felt, at all, like this. Never had her heart longed to be pulled close, to be completed by another, to be …happily ever after.

The hospice-nurse never looked her in the eyes, her husband never opened his.

Head down, coarsely breathing, Thomas seemed unable to hear.

Her eyes wide, mind grasping, she was all ears.

The doctor, eyes dull, face emotionless, hurried from the room while his words still hung in the disinfected air.

“His tumor has not responded to treatment… I’m sorry.”

She looked at Thomas, and silently thanked God, for life insurance and a boyfriend.
