Why Didn’t the Sun Come Up Today?

Back in the day, we used to say “as sure as the sun rises” to mean certainty beyond doubt. But after metaphysics collided with hard physics, things changed.

Thoughts became things–real things. Parents couldn’t longer dispel boogeymen by turning on lights to reveal mundane objects turned monstrous. We lost a lot of families that way.

But I digress. Happens as you get older. You’re inheriting a brave new world, kiddo, with so much more that needs thinking about to keep things right. Why didn’t the sun come up this morning? I forgot, and your Grammer, she wanted to sleep in.

"Welcome to Disney Planet!" exclaimed the hologram of the silly mouse.

Disney Planet: formerly known as Earth. A planet that, once we expanded to the stars, had great emotional pull, but not much intrinsic value. There were other worlds, both found and created, that put our cradle to shame.

Which was why Disney got it so cheap.

I nodded politely to the mouse and paid my way in. The massive doors to the metal sphere that encased the planet opened and admitted my ship.

I'd heard that the sunrises on Earth had been quite beautiful before the sphere was built.
