It’s not always easy to love Lana. Actually, I hate my wife.
She’s rambling about the costumes our children will wear to her next big costume party. I can think of no reason she’d throw a party and invite my coworkers and friends, except maybe to honor me and my hatred of parties, and of mixing business with pleasure, and children at parties, and dressing up.
“What are you wearing dear?” she asks me. “I found the cutest gypsy outfit for you, complete with crystal ball.”
I decided to throw a wake instead; Lana would be the guest of honor.

We found each other from across the crowded room. No one else got it; we were two people in street clothes with white, unadorned masks. But I knew all about the desire to dress up as nobody, to make my face match my psyche. Clearly, so did she.
We found a private place and ran our hands over each other's naked bodies, never quite touching, leaving the masks in place and never speaking a word. It was the single most sensual experience I've ever had.
I never found out her name. This way, every woman I see could be her.
