I write micro-fiction or flash or whatever you want to call them, these very short stories that must mean I'm clever. It's like being a producer, like Pet Sounds or something, bits and pieces and layers, one easy thing at a time all steady and manic.

Grace stays up with me and sometimes I think it's strange that I have a relationship with something that can walk across my mantle and fit behind the hutch. My dog's name is Scout for his long Spaniel fringes and we fall asleep to the Beach Boys every night before The Sloop John B.

Derek couldn't spread his fingers like Mr. Spock, but he certainly tried.

"Live long and prosper!" he would call out to strangers on the street.

Being a Down Syndrome boy let him get away with his Star Trek fantasies around town, but the bad kids at school teased him constantly.

One Saturday, while sitting on a toilet at the Kmart, Derek could see the feet of a boy in front of the urinal beside his stall. Startled and then delighted, he heard the boy cry out with authority, "Make it so Number One!"

Derek's best friend had been beamed aboard.

He stumbled down the dusty, dirty streets filled with people, each of whom seemed to look at him as if he were an alien.

"Excuse me... sir?"

No answer.

"Pardon me... ma'am. Sir? Anyone?!"

He turned around in circles, not knowing where he was, and with nobody willing to even talk to him.

"Why doesn't anyone understand me?!"

Then finally one man look at him and laughed. "That's a funny shirt."

"You speak English?"

Then he looked down at the shirt he was wearing.

"I was robbed, drugged, and dragged to Mexico, and all I got was this lousy t-shirt"

Even though I knew it was a typo, I liked seasy! When my kiddos left for school today, I told them to "Take it seasy!"
(My little girls spend an exorbitant amount of time looking at me with cute, quizzically pained expressions.)
