Maria responded with a flicker of her eyelids, a slight smile touching the corner of her mouth. She adjusted her shawl, and the man offered his arm. Taking it, she walked slowly with him across the large hallway toward the bottom of the wide staircase, accepting an offered flute of champagne from one of the circling staff. The other women turned their heads as she walked, a whisper passing amongst the guests. Maria smiled, enjoying her moment, brushing her hair back from her forehead. Now more than a whisper, a murmur, a voice: ‘Maria! Your skirt is in your knickers!’
