Tuesday

“Hit it with a bigger hammer,” he said.

So I did.

And the pink, porcelain pig that our father had had since he was a boy, shattered. I looked at my younger brother. His face seemed to move in slow motion; his eyebrows lifted, his mouth dropped open, and his shoulders shrugged up to meet his cheeks.

I closed my eyes, hearing the penny coins scatter across the broad oak desk and fall to the floor. And then, timed to perfection, I heard the key in the lock downstairs and my father’s voice float up the stairs:

“Boys? I’m home…!”

" Hit it with bigger hammer" he whispered.

His English wasn't the best, but the man knew his stuff. But he trusted a boy for a man's job.
I looked round as i walked towards the spot, my blurred vision, the immense whistling and cheering of thousands around me, i closed my eyes slowly.

The biggest weight wasn't the 90,000 full capacity stadium, or even the record high TV audience, but that vision of my manager's face as he crouched by the center circle staring, gazing.

I placed the ball perfectly on the spot, took 4 paces back.The big hammer...
