They stand apart

Two imposing pirates stand apart from each other; one dressed in a traditional pirate outfit that wouldn’t look out of place at a fancy dress party, the other, is dressed to kill in attire pertaining more to modern infantry than pirates.
“What are my options?” the contemporary pirate stutters.
As soon as the words were uttered, a third male enters the captain’s cabin from a concealed door on the lee side of the ship. In one hand, a magnum of champagne and the other hand held a fragmentation grenade.
“No options left, my dear friend, time has all but evaporated.”

"I had a great time."
"Thanks. Me too."
"Would you like to come in?"
"No, I have to be at the office early tomorrow. Sorry."
"I understand. Maybe next time."
"Sure."
"Well, see you later then."
"Yes...later."
I turn and walk back to the car for the long drive home.
It's been nearly a year since she died. I thought that enough time had passed for me to start getting on with my life. I was wrong; I see that now. The time may never come.
I walk into the quiet and empty house -- our house.
I love you, Jeannie.

Two men stand apart, face to face, eyes fixed upon the other. One man winks; the other scowls. One reaches up to run his hand through his thick, black hair; the other touches the flat, bald scalp of his head. One feels the slight bristle of stubble, sharp and rough; the other strokes a thick, greying beard. One man looks forward to the future, his dreams bright and in reach. The other man sighs, and thinks of all that has passed. One man smiles, the other wears a frown, and both turn their backs to walk away from the other.
