Last time I saw her...

Leaving the Womb

Last time I saw her awake, it was forty-eight hours before she died. Her oxygen tank was loud and cranked up as high as it could go. Each breath sounded like she was gasping for air.

And so I began to say my goodbyes. I held her hand and apologized for all the times I lost my patience. I sobbed while she remained calm and consoled me. The only time I saw fear in her eyes was when I told her my marriage was over.

"It's OK, Mom. You made me who I am. I can take care of myself."
