BUST

The day was too gorgeous to spend inside the house, so Nora went to the park across the street, laid on the grass and gazed at the clouds. She had been cooking and selling crystal meth nonstop for two days, which was typical for a holiday weekend. She lit a joint, inhaled, and planned how she would spend the two thousand dollars she'd worked so hard for.

Police sirens snapped her out of her daydream. Five squad cars raced down the block and stopped in front of her house. Cops kicked open the front door and stormed in.

Nora ran.

The clouds swirled and kicked out hail that destroyed the garden and stripped the fruit trees. Worse, it was pounding on my recently restored Mustang.

"Tell me again why you wanted to move to Kansas."

"To get out of the city and back to the land," she laughed.

"The radio says we've gone from a tornado watch to a warning. Exactly what does that mean?"

"Well, a watch means that you should be watching for one and a warning means that you should...."

When I woke up, both she and the Mustang were gone.

Man, I totally miss that car.

The stars slowly disappeared and reappeared, like lights bobbing in a dark pond. Every now and then we felt drops of rain hit our foreheads or legs. I could feel her breathing beside me.

I felt her hand on my chest, down, my ribs, down, my stomach, down, my waist, down. Her hands were so cold. I could feel her breathing on my neck. I love you.

Her breath disappeared from beside me and reappeared. The stars kept pace with my breathing. I tried to count. I started at a billion. Then her face appeared, and the stars were gone.
