DELIBERATIONS

The prosecutor warned the jury not to be fooled by Ted Brewster's good looks. "Remember that he embezzled millions of dollars, robbing thousands of employees of their retirement funds."

Marjorie dried her palms on her thighs. For forty-eight years her life had been an uneventful funeral march, but when she found a box on her porch containing one hundred thousand dollars in cash and a note saying, "Not Guilty", she had simultaneously been destroyed and reborn. Whether she took the money or not, she'd never be the same.

The judge excused the jury.

Brewster winked at Marjorie. Her spine tingled.
