The choice was food or rent, and since food is easier to acquire than shelter, Raylene used her last unemployment check to pay the rent.

Within the last year she and her children gradually lost every comfort. Lenny lamented the loss of cable television but when the television had to be sold to pay the utilities, Raylene feared he would never recover. Maxine seemed to endure better than any of them. Never once complaining, she gave up her dance lessons. "I just need to study more this semester," was her excuse.

That was when Raylene began crying herself to sleep.
