THE WAIT
When Paul is nervous, he twists his engagement ring. Eric slides his on and off.
Eric straightens Paul’s tie, adjusts his collar: “When will you be home?”
“Six. Will you—”
“Yes, I’ll pick Maggie up from soccer practice.”
Today, Paul takes Eric in his arms and won’t let go.
“We have the important things,” Eric says, to reassure him.
The clock in their living room has no hands. They’ve fallen off.
Paul keeps promising to repair it, but Eric knows he is waiting.
It has been fifteen years since Paul proposed.
How exuberant they were, when the future seemed close.
