We, the Volunteers, had returned. The mission was a success, and we had found our new home among the stars.

It should've been the greatest celebration the world had ever seen. But the twenty of us didn't feel like celebrating.

Einstein had been completely right. Even though we were all older but a year, centuries had passed here on the dying Earth. Everyone we loved was dead and gone.

We all reacted differently. Most slowly became secluded, cloistered away from a world too painful to see.

Commander May's reaction, I thought, was much healthier. He wrote a song about it.
