Jim: Keeping Quiet

At the Waltzing Mathilde, Jack sat in a darkened booth, nursing a mug of something almost like beer and listening to the drone of conversations all around him.

All over the Belt, people were talking about ‘The Nightmare’. It seemed everybody had it – the dream in which a claw ripped the dreamers out of their homes and into space.

Only Jack knew it was because of his accident with the tiny life on Asteroid Kansas. How could he have known that Kansas wasn’t just another barren rock?

Jack could never tell anybody about what happened. He would not be found!

Why you gotta pick on Kansas… man?

Well, kipp, I chose that asteroid (asteroid # 3124 is really named Kansas) because the theme that day was something about Kansas. But it worked out really well because when you think about weird aliens in the real world then you automatically think of Kansas, the state. Right?
And I should know - I was born there (the state, not the asteroid).

I guess I like it here in Kansas, i'm not sure why (well I did just spend a month in L.A. so in many ways i know exactly why). We're famous for grass, and the smell of stockyards, and... hmmm... alien pictographs mowed in the grass. I think that's about it, but it's enough for me.

I just wish asteroid #3124 had turned out to be a nice asteroid in your story, a nice place to live and raise a family. Not the carrier of claw-mare causing purplish death spores.

I guess I'm kind of a romantic :)

I suppose it'd be a nice place to live and raise offspring if you were a purple 'death spore'. Does that help?
