It began with a nosy rent-a-cop in the mall's covered parking lot.

By the time they reached the city limits there were three police cruisers on their tail.

Shooting down the I-5 with the gas pedal to the floor - maintaining a shuddering 170mph while slaloming through Monday morning traffic - that gained another two city cops and four state troopers.

The helicopter press crew joined the chase at L.A., broadcasting their wily avoidance of the police dragnet live on the national news.

It wasn't until the Mexican border finally came into view that someone thought to check the gas gauge.
