The morning was cold and dark, with hints of dawn teasing at the edges. Dexter Gruntfinger, President of the ornithological society, had staked out his position the night before and waited for this moment. He barely contained a gasp as the Purple-throated Nuthatch landed next to a rock, placed an acorn on it, and picked up a smaller stone nearby.

Tap tap tap. The Nuthatch rapped the stone against the shell, a crude but clever tool.

Silently, the bark of the nearby tree slid open in response to the sound, revealing a large hydraulic press surrounded by shattered acorn shells.
