Michele: In the Beginning

It rose from the bottom of the sea, finding energy in the currents, the tidal water forming a long, glassy arm. When it reached the surface, waves balanced and curled on its peak and a knuckled fist took shape.

The arm pulled back into the sea; when it rose again, its mighty fist pummeled the sky with a deafening roar that seemed to come from the air and the earth as well as the water. It tore a deep hole in the sky, from which a brilliant display of light and color flowed.

The two beings tumbled through the hole.

By way of explanation: I am strictly an evolutionist, but when someone sent me this photo of the aurora last night, I was immediately struck by how much it looked like what i imagined the creation of the world to look like when I was very young.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Now the earth was without shape and empty, and darkness was over the surface of the watery deep, but the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the water. God said, "Let there be light." And there was light!

So today's story and photo is my eight year old view of what the start of humanity was like.

When I told this story to a friend, he said "so God ripped the sky a new asshole and it shit out two humans?"

I've always been struck by how Genesis reads as an evolutionary primer written for small children or primatives.
