The day he swam in, I knew he was trouble. Overly optimistic fellows with bright coloring never went over well. I was soon cornered near the sea lettuce, his bug eyes staring at me like he’d never seen a beta before.

“Wanna hear a funny one?” he swam about circling me in an unnerving fashion after performing a visual autopsy to his satisfaction.

“I beg your pardon?”

“A joke-wanna hear one?” not waiting for any reply, the clownfish prattled on, weaving his foolish story until administering the punch line:

“And then the cat said…”

I swam away, rolling my eyes.
